Hypnodisc

My version
On the Make flickr pool I found hypnodisk by osbock. From the description:
The hypno disk is a dvd with a hypno pattern glued on. It’s attached to a CD-ROM spindle motor attached to an arduino with Adafruit’s motor shield. I used a Sharp infrared rangefinder to make the hypno spin faster as you got closer. If you got too close it reverses direction.
I thought it was an excellent idea and wanted my own. I was getting bored with revision come the penultimate exam so I started making it one evening. It’s a fairly simple build but I took plenty of photos of the build so I’ll describe the process here.
Watching the video gives you a sense of what it feels like to watch it but it’s much better seeing it live. The limited frames per second of the camera slightly ruins the effect in my opinion.
- Testing the motor I found in my bag of motors.
- This test hypno pattern was printed on A4 paper because I need to get into university to use the A3 printers there
- Attaching motor to card with double sided tape. I eventually used to super glue to make it permanent.
- The test pattern in position.
- Starting the electronics for it
- Testing the electronics
- My failed pizza attempt I had that night. They took a ridiculously long time to make!
- Messing with the code using my laptop
- A3 pattern is now in place and I’m putting on the letters using printer sticker paper. The letters were cut out then put back in place so they were correctly aligned
- Letters getting stuck in place
- A view from the back. The blue foam blocks are to make it sit level
- The (nearly) final design
